Windows Process Description:

The file wmexe.exe is part of the Winmodem Drivers by 3com and US Robotics. The process wmexe.exe is a necessary component of the 3com or US Robotics Winmodem drivers since it is responsible for successful communication with the computer system's internal modem. Disabling the application wmexe.exe when the 3com or US Robotics is being used is greatly discouraged as without it, the modem will cease to function properly, if not at all. Furthermore, removal of the process file wmexe.exe from the computer system when the modem utilized by it is a 3com or US Robotics modem is highly discouraged since the modem will not be able to communicate with the computer system.

The wmexe.exe executable is flagged as a system process but not as a core file of Windows Operating Systems as not all Windows Operating Systems utilize 3com or US Robotics modems. The wmexe.exe process however, is advised to run during the Windows boot up process so that it will readily communicate with the internal modem of the system. The application wmexe.exe is also flagged as a background process because no visible window or any indication for that matter is displayed by it whenever it runs in the computer system.

Winmodems which utilize the file wmexe.exe are modems which use software instead of hardware for its operations.
