Windows Process Description:
The spoolss.exe starts the Printer Spooler, the system process used by the Windows NT operating systems to print documents. It is responsible for sending the data to the printer and monitors its activity. For newer Operating system like Windows XP, spoolsv.exe replaced spoolss.exe as the process name for Print Spooler service.
In a Windows NT network environment, if a workstation chooses to print, the operating system call on the graphics device interface (GDI). The GDI will call the printer driver corresponding to the printer device installed. The print job will now be handled by the spooler. The client side spooler file is winspool.drv, the file will attempt a remote procedure call (RPC) to the server side of the spooler which is spools.exe. The spools.exe will open and direct application programming interface (API) to call the file spoolss.dll. The file spools.dll passes the print job to the file localspl.dll which sends the information to the local printer.
The spoolss.exe and the spooler subsystem require the following files: advapi.dll, kernel.dll, user32.dll, spools.dll, and rpcrt4.dll. The spooler subsystem's registry location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Current
ControlSet/Services/Spooler.
To connect to a network printer, Windows NT uses spoolss.exe to communicate using the TCP/IP, NetBEUI and NWlink protocols. The spoolss.exe uses 44,816 KB of hard drive space. The last version released is 5.00.2161.1.
Errors pertaining to spoolss.exe can be resolved by expanding a copy of spoolss.exe and spoolss.dll from the operating system installation disc. Deleting the *.spl files in the c:/windows/system32 /spool /PRINTERS folder will help solved printing problems. Upgrading to the latest service pack will resolved most of the printing related issues especially memory leaks and high CPU usage.
