The program file installstub.exe is utilized by the application Plaxo Toolbar for Outlook and Outlook Express. In the Plaxo version 2.4.1.5 of the program, the process file installstub.exe is its central executable process. Primarily, it is used to check for updated or new information regarding bug fixes or updates for the Plaxo Toolbar for Outlook and Outlook Express made available through the Plaxo Network. In newer versions of the program, the file installstub.exe has been changed to plaxohelper.exe.

Attaching the Plaxo application to the Outlook Express upon its startup is also the installstub.exe process' responsibility, because the Outlook Express does not have API. The executable process also oversees that the user's Outlook Express or Outlook address book is coordinated with the servers of Plaxo. When contacts reply to a request for update, the updated info is automatically returned to the servers of Plaxo. It is recommended that users who use personal firewalls like ZoneAlarm and the like should configure the installstub.exe application to access the internet since the Plaxo program needs it to function properly.

The installstub.exe process file is also known by the name PlaxoUpdate and Plaxo Auto Updater. The file is automatically loaded during Windows startup through these registry keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run. There are several observed file sizes of the installstub.exe executable on Windows XP platforms; 116736 bytes seen in 43% of all instances, 154696 bytes, 155720 bytes, 151624 bytes, 119368 bytes, 152136 bytes and 178248 bytes are seen in some instances.

The default location for the installstub.exe application has been found to be in the C:/Program Files folder, as in: C:/Program Files/Plaxo/2.4.1.5/installstub.exe; take note that the number indicates the version of the Plaxo program housing the file. No readily visible window pops up when the installstub.exe process is operating so it is deemed as a background process.
