Windows Process Description:

The process inetinfo.exe is a valid application associated to the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is defined as the Internet Information Services or IIS. It contains most of the internet services provided by IIS such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) and NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol).

The inetinfo.exe process acts as Microsoft's IIS Web Server that receives requests from the TCP/IP subsystem. It directs the requests to the respective services, which in turn interpret the requests, execute them and return the results to the client. All these services run within the same process inetinfo.exe, thus they are able to share cached data such as log file data, account information and file handles.

The inetinfo.exe application handles the request by default and simply returns the contents of the file requested like images, CSS files, external Java Scripts or HTML pages. Sometimes, requests are routed to an ISAPI extension. ISAPI extension is a compiled class installed on the web server whose main responsibility is to return the markup for the requested file type.

The file inetinfo.exe is usually located in a subfolder of C:/Windows/System32/inetsrv/or sometimes in the subfolder of C:/Windows/System32/. Its known file sizes on Windows XP are 13312 bytes, 13824 bytes, 14336 bytes, 14608 bytes, 15360 bytes, 135168 bytes, 377344 bytes or 15872 bytes, which is 78% of its entire occurrence.

The inetinfo.exe process is a fundamental system file for Windows signed by Microsoft Corporation. The inetinfo.exe program has no visible window and capable of using ports to connect to LAN or internet. The inetinfo.exe file is able to hide itself.

Unless your computer is running as a web server, the program inetinfo.exe should not be running because of its vulnerability to malicious purposes. The inetinfo.exe can be stopped and disabled through the Administrative Tools/Services/IIS Admin of the Control Panel.
