Windows Process Description:

The process icserver.exe is associated with the Intercast viewer software from Intel Corporation. Intercast is a technology developed by Intel Corporation which targeted the broadcasting of information like computer application programs and web pages on the same channel of a television broadcast. The process icserver.exe serves as an interface for this technology which requires the installation of a compatible TV Tuner add-on card in your personal computer. The Intel Intercast Viewer which decodes the signal is launched by the executable file icserver.exe. Intercast data used Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI) to embed information in the video stream which carries the Intercast compatible program. Without the process icserver.exe, it would be impossible to decode the signal and the feature of watching a television broadcast in a window while viewing web pages on the other would be virtually impossible. Another functionality added by the process file icserver.exe is the ability of users to download transmitted softwares and applications.

To further the technology brought by the process icserver.exe, Intel and Microsoft worked together to incorporate the process icserver.exe in Microsoft's WebTV for Windows which was introduced in the Windows 98 operating system environment. WebTV for Windows gives the personal computer the capability of a television while supporting services like data broadcasting and interactive programming for TV. The process icserver.exe showed a lot of promise that Compaq manufactured some personal computer models with built-in TV tuners and several networks like CNN, NBC, M2 (now more popularly known as MTV2) and The Weather Channel started using the technology. The Intercast technology broadcast only in a single direction, transmitting to the user but does not accept transmissions from the user. That is the reason why the process icserver.exe functions only as a viewer for the broadcasts.

Installation of the process file icserver.exe places the file in the default installation folder under the directory C:/Program Files/Intercast/Components/. It is highly recommended that the user do not change the target directory folder in order to easily validate the authenticity of the file. The process file icserver.exe is not part of the critical core files of the Windows operating system environment and does not affect the stability of the operating system or the functionality of your computer system. The file icserver.exe is function specific for Intel Intercast Technology.
