Windows Process Description:
The hppt.exe process filename is a filename associated with the Parallel Port Test software of Hewlett Packard's ScanJet scanner. According to resources, this is a valid and registered process filename from Hewlett Packard but it is not a critical component of the Windows Operation System. Therefore, the hppt.exe process is not necessarily needed to run in the Windows startup list of processes and programs. The computer user is generally given a choice if the hppt.exe file can run on startup or not. Disabling it will not be a source of error for the computer. However, if an HP scanner is being used, then it is suggested that the hppt.exe file remain in the state of how it was installed when the Hewlett Packard scanner or device was installed.
The hppt.exe process file should not be confused with the hpppt.exe process file which is also a component of the HP Parallel Port Utility. The Parallel Port Utility is a program created for Hewlett Packard devices that test whether the parallel port is put to ECP mode or EPP mode. ECP is Extended Capabilities Port while EPP is Enhanced Parallel Port. Both are parallel port configurations which support two way communications between the parallel port and the devices that are connected or attached to it. Several devices such as printers, scanners and copiers require two way communications to be able to allow enabling of certain software utilities which controls these devices to gather information about the current status of the devices connected.
In case there is an error occurred concerning the hppt.exe, it is recommended to perform a un-installation and reinstallation process of the device's software. The un-installation process should eliminate errors concerning the hppt.exe and the reinstallation should recover whatever needs to be recovered to be able to run hppt.exe. But prior to un-installation, make sure that the Hewlett Packard device is unhooked to the computer to avoid any lost information. The hppt.exe should not be taking up too much system resources as it is just a small component of the Parallel Port Test Utility.
