Windows Process Description:

The file hkss.exe is an active process that is integrated in Compaq PCs. The file is related to the software called Hot Key Support Software. The hkss.exe file enables the different multi-media functions such as sleep and volume controls of the keyboards from Compaq. Once the process hkss.exe is uninstalled from the system, the multi-media will then cease from functioning. However, the Normal Keys can still function properly even with the absence pf the active process.

The process hkss.exe automatically runs as soon the Windows is activated. The file hkss.exe can be configured with the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run.

The file hkss.exe configures all the function keys to specific other specific functions. The file also activates combinations of hotkeys to conduct particular functions. Examples of these functions are the initiation of the Telephone Dialer and the activation of instant connection to the Address Book. It is suggested that if hot keys are not yet configured on the user's computer, the user must have this task disabled first.

It must be noted that the active process hkss.exe may not function well after an upgrade. This happens especially when Windows 2000 has been installed within a particular Compaq Presario-based desktop computer or laptop. Certain Keyboard controls such as those for sound, Internet access and CD-ROM will eventually malfunction.

After you install Windows 2000 on your Compaq Presario-based computer, the keyboard controls for sound, CD-ROM, and instant Internet access do not function. This occurs due to the fact that Compaq makes use of a custom keyboard with a compatible Keyboard driver to further enhance the functionalities of the keys. Windows 2000 does not naturally support this feature thus it only allows the installation of standard keyboard driver.

The active file is compatible with the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
