When you install Google toolbar to your computer, you have the option to install the Google Compute Toolbar Client which consists the googledcc.exe process. The googledcc.exe process makes various complex computations in your computer's background, most notably, when the system is idle.

The Google Compute Client program (Google DCC) that houses the googledcc.exe process adds a double helix button to your Google toolbar when installed. This button allows you to enable or disable the computing activities of the googledcc.exe file. In most cases, the googledcc.exe process is finds its use for students and other computing enthusiasts to do calculations for them. Once executed, the googledcc.exe process will take a portion of a complex research problem and will make computations from thereon. The googledcc.exe process will try to compare the computations with other results on the internet as gathered from other computers. Because of this, the Google Compute Client became popular to members of the academe, technical researchers, scientists, and the likes.

To command the program to stop computing, and likewise to stop the googledcc.exe process from making calculations, you will need to click on the double helix icon and select the "Stop Computing" option.

The googledcc.exe file is found in the Program Files folder containing other Google toolbar clients such as the Google Define, Local Weather, Google Scholar, Google Video, and others.

Unfortunately, as of this time, the Google Compute Client (the program housing the process googledcc.exe) is not available anymore. This service which started on March 2002 ended in October 2005. The reason behind the closure of the service may be attributed to the small number of users who find the process useful to be part of a toolbar. In the course of its existence as part of the Google toolbar, it's most notable contribution was for a non-profit organization popularly known as Folding@Home (or FAH) who is involved in making extensive computations related to protein folding simulations as well as other molecular activities. The results obtained by the googledcc.exe process from its computing activities were used to make cures for various diseases.
