Windows Process Description:
The process gearsec.exe, known as 'Gear Security Service' is associated with the Gear CD/DVD Burning Software by GearSoftware. Installation of Gear products automatically causes this process to run in the system.
The gearsec.exe process is part of the Gear Software's older driver sets that allows the Gear CD/DVD Copy Engine to recognize and operate with CD and DVD drives on Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. The Gear CD/DVD Recording Engine is not only used in Gear Software products but in several other products as well, including Apple iTunes, Norton Ghost, Cakewalk Pyro, AudibleManager, DiscWelder and still many others. Thus, the process gearsec.exe may be present in the system even if the user does not use any Gear Software application.
The process gearsec.exe has several controls which deal with security. This process also supports CD/DVD copying programs with their reading or recording capabilities. Thus, uninstalling the gearsec.exe process and other Gear Drivers would cause these programs to lose their copying functionalities. Though new installers do not require this process in order to run, many older installers remain dependent upon the process gearsec.exe.
In the event that the gearsec.exe process is accidentally removed from the system and eventually causes some programs to malfunction, the user is advised to contact the application manufacturer to determine if an updated version of the software is available. If that is the case, then the user may simply reinstall the software so that the process gearsec.exe is also reinstalled.
One common problem encountered when executing the gearsec.exe process is that it causes the system to run sluggishly. The user may solve this problem by configuring the gearsec.exe process to run manually. The user may do this by going to the 'Control Panel'-'Administrative Tools'-'Services'-'Gear Security'. The user should right-click on this, select 'Properties', click the 'Stop' button on the 'General' Tab and finally, set the 'Startup Type' to Manual.
The process gearsec.exe typically occupies 53248 bytes of file size on disk. It is normally located in a subfolder of C:/Windows. Although located in the Windows folder, the gearsec.exe process is not a Windows core file.
