Windows Process Description:

The process gameutil.exe or Game Util is part of Rage3DTweak, which is a tweaking utility used with specific graphics cards that are ATI chipset-enabled.

Rage3D Tweak is a tweak application that enables users to overclock their graphics card and do other tweaks. As part of this utility, the gameutil.exe process was initially used to manipulate some Matrox video card registry entries. The process gameutil.exe since then serves as a functional video card tweaker that offers specific profiles for clock speeds and tweaks.

The Overclocking display feature of the process gameutil.exe permits complete manipulation of clock speeds for Radeon cards. A graphics card has two types of clocks: the Core clock and the Memory clock. The process gameutil.exe allows for the alteration of these two clocks to be done independently. The gameutil.exe process also allows for the configuration of different overclocking settings on a per-game basis. This implies that the configured settings will reset upon re-boot.

The process gameutil.exe offers another practical feature relevant to Overclocking called OC Testing. OC Testing facilitates automatic testing of memory clock and maximum core clock speeds. A real-time 3D display will show the user a clock test in progress. The user may conduct the clock test by incrementally increasing the clock speed according to a selected interval.

An icon appears in the system tray as soon as this program is installed. Termination of the process gameutil.exe will result to the removal of this icon from the system tray. Since this process is essential to the program containing it, the user is advised not to eliminate it from the system unless there is concern regarding its legitimacy as a process per se.

The gameutil.exe process normally has file sizes ranging from 82432 bytes to 24064 bytes on Windows. To automatically start the gameutil.exe process upon Windows startup, the user may add the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/User Shell Folders or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run to the system registry.
