Windows Process Description:

It is quite expensive and bulky to setup a fax machine for each user in an office environment. An average fax machine does not spew forth faxes every second so it is highly possible for two or more employees to share a single fax machine. But what if the users are separated by rooms, cubicles or floors? Then the problem of proximity arises - where do we put the fax machine so it is highly reachable for the employees. Most companies invest in the technology called Fax over IP (Same concept as Voice over IP).

GFI, a Microsoft Gold Partner, developed a software to integrate your office's PABX system, Microsoft Exchange (or Lotusnotes) server to act as a virtual fax machine for a limited amount of clients called the GFI FaxMaker. This software give faxing capabilities to each of the company's employees through their computers instead of putting a fax machine per employee saving them the added space, electricity even paper since incoming faxes are soft-copies.

However, like fax machines, to be able to receive and send on-the-fly, the application should be ran at all time as a background process. The executable fmstart.exe is the program that acts as the listener for incoming faxes and the daemon (background process) for outgoing faxes to run via Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes. The program fmstart.exe continually connects to the email server where the service is installed and awaits for incoming faxes. This also connect to the email server should the employee wishes to send out a fax to a client. This software uses minimum local network resource as this process is similar to sending an email. The only way for the application to use internet bandwidth is when the client is in a remote location most likely setup with secure connection or a virtual private network to connect to the email server.

The application fmstart.exe also does not use much of the computers resources since its primary role is just to listen for both incoming and outgoing faxes. Decoding and encoding is done through the email server where the FaxMaker server is installed.

If uninstalled or ended in the task manager, the client machine will no longer listen for incoming faxes from the fax server.
