The common path of the file cavs.exe is C:/Program Files/AntiVirus/Cheyenne. The file cavs.exe is not a Windows system file thus it is not required for Windows to run smoothly. The cavs.exe process can be added to the start up processes by adding the registry entry to a Run, RunOnce, RunServices, or RunServicesOnce in the system registry.

The cavs.exe process is the main process that regulates the intervals of scans made by the Cheyenne AntiVirus program. The cavs.exe process also gives the user control on the scheduling of security tasks so that it would not affect other programs in a specific time frame. The cavs.exe process was developed by Cheyenne Software, Inc. (currently known as eTrust) for the Cheyenne Antivirus software. Cheyenne Antivirus works in conjunction with Cheyenne's network antivirus solution InocuLan. This software which utilizes the cavs.exe process scans for viruses in document attachments and shared databases on messaging servers. Infected files are automatically healed and users are notified directly through e-mail. This solution makes sure that the messaging server is virus free. To keep the server virus free, automatic scans can be scheduled using the cavs.exe application to run periodically to check new messages.
