The ca.exe file launches the eTrust EZ Firewall by Computer Associates. A firewall is a program designed to protect the user from malicious files and websites trying to gain access to the user's computer during internet use.
Once installed, the ca.exe occupies approximately 24576 bytes to 943880 bytes of space on the hard drive of a system with a Windows XP operating system. There are several known versions of the ca.exe process such as 3.00.0002, 1.00, 5.1.039.004, 5.5.109.000, 1.01.0002, 3.00, 5.01.0001, 1.00, 2.40c, 2.51a, 2.50a, 2.42, 5.5.114.000, 5.1.039.000, 5.00.0003 and 1.0.0.2. The ca.exe process also comes with the eTrust EZ Armor, the Acoustica Effects Pack, the CA eTrust Internet Security or Project, all programs created, developed and distributed by Computer Associates. The ca.exe process can run on Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows XP operating systems.
Once the ca.exe process is installed, it will appear as an icon beside the clock on the taskbar. The program is a Verisign signed file and has its own digital signature. The ca.exe process is able to monitor applications and is also a compressed file.
Computer Associates International also has released a ca.exe process version for notebook computers. The eTrust EZ Firewall r5.1 has all the high-end hardware based features of desktop computer firewalls yet is user-friendly for the end-user to manage and configure.
The ca.exe process blocks access attempts from suspicious entities and advises the user of each attempt. Though the pop up dialog box may be disturbing, the user can configure the ca.exe application's settings so that each attempt does not cause an intrusion on computer use.
The ca.exe process has a summary screen which provides the user with an overall status report of blocked or allowed web sites, virus warnings and access attempts. The eTrust EZ Firewall program detects new network connections and applies predefined security policies to them. This ensures the security of mobile users when connecting to a new hot spot or network.
The eTrust EZ Firewall was distributed by Computer Associates but is no longer offered.
