The aol.exe file launches the AOL Fast Start. AOL Fast Start is a part of freeware called AOL. AOL is an internet browser, while at the same time allowing the user access to AOL email accounts and AOL instant messaging.

The aol.exe file which launches Fast Start enables the user to place AOL on standby. The AOL icon will be placed on the system tray as the user is able to use and operate other programs and applications.

There was a recent email hoax perpetuated by the owner of the Joke A Day website Ray Owens that the aol.exe file was malware. This is nothing more than a hoax as aol.exe is a valid file that comes with the AOL program.
